How the age is worked out

The calculator first counts the complete months between the two dates. If the as-on day of the month is earlier than the birth day, one month is taken off. The remaining days are counted from the date reached after adding those complete months to the date of birth. Leap years are handled automatically.
Worked example
Date of birth 15 January 2000, age as on 23 October 2026.
From 15 January 2000 to 15 October 2026 is 26 years and 9 months. From 15 to 23 October is 8 more days. Age = 26 years, 9 months, 8 days.
Total days lived = 9,778. The next birthday is 15 January 2027, which is 84 days away.
When your exact age matters
- School admissions: many schools set an age cut-off on a particular date, such as 31 March or 1 June.
- Exams and jobs: eligibility often depends on your age as on a notified date, which is why the Age as on field is useful.
- Insurance and savings products: premiums and eligibility can depend on age at the last or nearest birthday.
- Paperwork: forms often ask for age in completed years, months or days.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Subtracting only the years. Someone born in December is not yet a year older in January. Count whole years that have actually been completed.
- Ignoring the cut-off date. Use the date given in the notice, not today’s date.
- Forgetting leap years. A year can have 365 or 366 days, which changes the total number of days lived.
- Using a different date of birth. Use the date on your official certificate, since that is what authorities will check.
Frequently asked questions
Can I find my age on a past or future date?
Yes. Change the Age as on date. This is handy for exam eligibility, job applications, insurance, or school admission cut-off dates.
How are leap-year birthdays (29 February) handled?
In years that are not leap years, a 29 February birthday is counted on 1 March by this calculator. Different organisations use 28 February or 1 March, so check the rule that applies to you.
Why does my age in months and days differ from other calculators?
Months have different lengths, so there is more than one reasonable way to count the leftover days. This tool adds whole months to the date of birth first and then counts the remaining days, which matches how most people read a date difference.
Is my date of birth stored or sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and the date you enter is not sent to any server.
What is the legal age for voting or driving in India?
The voting age is 18. Driving rules depend on the vehicle and state: for example 18 for a regular licence and 16 for a gearless two-wheeler up to 50 cc. Rules can change, so check the official Regional Transport Office or government source.
How do I find my age in months only?
Look at the Total months row in the result. It counts the complete months between your date of birth and the as-on date.
Why do some forms ask for age in completed years?
“Completed years” means only whole years that have passed. If you are 25 years and 11 months old, your age in completed years is 25.
